The gamblers at the Red Fields call Avery Faro a Monster. I call him my cousin. I know about his secret weapon though, the thing that wins him all those fights. Avery can’t feel anything, not pain, and not love. We aren’t even that close, third cousins, really. But, somewhere along the way, we became closer than that… far too close. Now I think that he’s lost it completely. He’s jealous. He’s possessive. He’s hiding something from me. He calls me his Laurel, only his. But I know there are secrets at the Red Fields. By day, Avery is just a regular schoolboy. By night, he morphs into an underground fighter. How can I save Avery from himself?

How do you defeat somebody who doesn’t even feel?

Reanimate eBook Sophia Whittemore Reviews

I honestly don't know what I just read. I spent most of the book wondering—and wondering why I was reading it. If I were to score this on story and plot alone, it would probably be a 2 star for me, maybe 3. The writing, though. It was a beauty to immerse myself in these words! I was completely lost from the moment I started it, and then proceeded to finish it all in the same night. I would have gladly kept reading, and not grown tired. I think I could read an instruction manual if it felt that engrossing and had that writing style.

Actually, on that note, I might have loved the story more if it had been a little longer. I was so pulled into the heads of these characters that I could have stood for more time to elapse between the beginning and the end. More information, more plot, more of everything.

The characters were so strong. The almost leaped out of the pages and into my life. They resonated inside my head well after I finished the story. Please, let this only be book one! I cared what happened to them, I groaned and complained to my when they made stupid decisions, and I cheered when something happened that could have maybe been happy.

Not that there was a lot of happy in this book. It was definitely dark. Clean, but dark, with this air of depression and gloom. A foreboding sense that made me wonder if anything could be right again for these characters. I was on the edge, biting my nails and waiting for the other shoe to drop the entire time I read this.

There are still so many unanswered questions, and still so much story left to tell, and I so hope it gets told. Just maybe a little more thoroughly next time. The writing was so well done that it could have used a little more length and nobody would have minded. Now, excuse me while I go see if the rest of Sophia Whittemore's works are as beautifully tragic and magically written as Reanimate. - GMB
